Scott Morrison has dismissed as "complete absolute rubbish" reports he's talked to the prime minister about being given the treasury portfolio.

The social services minister told Tony Abbott he would be more successful than Joe Hockey, The Australian reported on Monday.

"I don't know what people are on in this town (Canberra) with all this nonsense going on, but this is total and utter nonsense," Mr Morrison told Sky News.

Earlier he dismissed claims he was taking over this year's budget.

He said it was a team decision for him to release two big reforms - to the aged pension and child care.

"I think the hyperventilating over this issue is just getting frankly a little bit ridiculous," he told the Nine Network.
