Morrison not 'jockeying' on budget: Pyne

Education minister Christopher Pyne says Scott Morrison is expected to be out there making the case for social services reform.

Social Services Minister Scott Morrison is "doing his job" and isn't jockeying for position after taking a higher public profile than Treasurer Joe Hockey in the lead up to next week's budget.

Liberal frontbencher Christopher Pyne says Mr Morrison is expected to make the case for social services reform.

"He is just doing his job," Mr Pyne told Nine Network on Friday.

"The thing about the politics in Australia is rather than worrying about people jockeying, we should recognise when someone is doing a good job and Scott is out there, prosecuting the case around social services reform, around pensions and families and childcare.

"And I think he is a star of the government."

Fairfax media reports Mr Morrison has given 16 interviews in seven days, while Mr Hockey had given just four.

Mr Morrison said on Thursday that if next week's budget wasn't well received "we're all out of a job".

Meanwhile, Mr Pyne said the May 12 budget for 2015/16 will confirm the government knows what it's doing, boost confidence, create jobs and support families.

But Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese said Mr Pyne was talking in cliches and confidence had slumped because of the government's first budget last year.

"The last budget hit confidence because it was unfair to its core and it damaged the Australian economy," he said.

"We need a repair job on last year's budget next Tuesday."

Mr Morrison late on Thursday announced funding of $850 million for child care services to help disadvantaged children would be in the budget, alongside changes to the pension tightening up eligibility rules.
