In an 11th hour attempt to push through parliament the re-introduction of temporary protection visas the federal government has announced changes to its stalled Migration and Maritime Powers Amendments Bill.
Immigration Minister Scott Morrison says if the legislation passes the Senate, asylum seekers on bridging visas would receive work rights, and the coalition's reduction of Australia's humanitarian intake would be reversed.
Asylum seekers who've spent years in the immigration system would also be 'fast-tracked' towards a refugee determination.
And as Kristina Kukolja reports, the amendments could even create pathways to permanent residency for asylum seekers who've arrived by boat.
