Treasurer Scott Morrison says South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill has made a positive contribution to the tax debate, after suggesting a GST shake-up.

Treasurer Scott Morrison has welcomed South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill's contribution to the tax debate.

Mr Weatherill has proposed lifting the GST to 15 per cent, but in return wants a share of income tax revenue in place of commonwealth grants.

"I really do welcome both his contribution and his treasurer's contribution to this debate. They are part of it. Sadly their federal Labor colleagues have chosen not to be," Mr Morrison told reporters in Brisbane on Friday.
