Scott and Jenny Morrison tried for 14 years without success to have children and started to imagine life without them.

In a video shown to the Liberal election campaign launch on Mother's Day in Melbourne on Sunday, the prime minister and his wife talked about their struggles to have a family.

"You don't assume that you're going to have problems with having kids," Mr Morrison said in the video.

"(We tried) for years, absolute years, all up about 14 years."

Mrs Morrison said she had about 10 cycles of IVF and was diagnosed with endometriosis.

"I sort of gave up at one point," she said.

Mr Morrison said the couple started to think about life without children.

"Over that period of time, you go through some incredibly difficult periods in your relationship and your faith," Mr Morrison said.

"I desperately wanted to be a parent also and I didn't want it to destroy our lives as well."

The pair were asked to describe each other as superheroes - Mr Morrison chose "the mum from the Incredibles" while Mrs Morrison chose Superman.

"He used to look a lot like Clark Kent," she said.

Mr Morrison's mother Marion, Jenny Morrison and two children Abbey and Lily introduced him on stage at the launch.
