It may come as a surprise to some, but almost seven out of 10 Australian workers believe their employer cares for their well-being.

That compares with a world average of just over 50 per cent, according to a new global survey by tech-giant Microsoft and global office furniture manufacturer Steelcase.

It found that while three-quarters of workers surveyed like their work environment, 30 per cent also said their job stress is increasing as their traditional work-life division blurs, to the extent they are becoming less engaged with their workplaces.

Steelcase communications director Christine Congdon said the problems facing Australian workers today are more complex than they used to be.

"Australian workers are in the midst of fast-changing business processes and increased competitive pressures that may be causing them to feel overwhelmed and less engaged at work," she told AAP.

However, the survey also found Australian workers are "technology traditionalists" being mostly desk-bound with desktop computers (77 per cent) and landline telephones (89 per cent).

But they are not all technological dinosaurs, with 50 per cent having relatively easy access to video-conferencing, the second highest in the world after India at 56 per cent, and compared with a global average of 35 per cent.

The global survey of 12,480 workers included more than 1000 Australians.
