A mother pushing her baby girl in a stroller has been critically injured after being hit by a car driven by an 80-year-old man.

The 30-year-old woman and her eight-month-old daughter were hit by the car in Dubbo on Monday night.

The mother suffered head and internal injuries and is in a critical but stable condition in Dubbo Hospital, while her daughter has bruising and a swollen stomach.

Police say the elderly driver waited at the crash scene until emergency services arrived.

He was then taken to Dubbo Hospital for mandatory testing.
