A mother returned home after running an errand to find her adult son and his housemate stabbed to death in a back bedroom.

Homicide police say it is too early to know if the men killed each other in a fight, it was murder-suicide or if someone else killed them.

They established a crime scene at the home in the Geelong of suburb of Whittington after the woman made the discovery on Wednesday morning.

She found her 30-year-old son and his 23-year-old friend dead with extensive upper body injuries.

"It was a pretty gruesome find," Victoria Police Senior Sgt Lloyd told the Geelong Advertiser.

"It is horrendous."

There were initial reports the men both showed signs of defensive stab wounds, but homicide squad Detective acting Senior Sergeant Sol Solomon would not confirm this.

He said the men were not known to police and a weapon was yet to be identified.

"We're keeping an open mind and there are a number of possibilities," he told reporters.

"Whether there was a fight or some sort of physical interaction between the two males, it is way too soon."

Neighbours reported hearing a nondescript noise late on Tuesday, but it is unknown if this was related to the deaths.

"This morning one of the neighbours reported screams coming from the house but we're pretty confident that would have been the unfortunate mother who discovered the bodies," Sgt Solomon said.

"She was home last night and went out this morning to do an errand."
