The mother of a little girl found wandering the streets before dawn and taken to a Central Coast police station has come forward.

The mother of a young girl found wandering the streets on the NSW Central Coast has come forward.

A member of the public found the girl, who said her name was Ruby, walking alone near the intersection of Etna and Mann streets in North Gosford, in the early hours of Friday morning.

The girl, who is about three-years-old, was taken to Gosford Police Station, where she reportedly told officers she liked "eating toast and reading".

"She looks well cared for," Detective Inspector Glenn Trayhurn told News Corp.

Ruby reportedly followed her dad out of her house as he left for work.

By mid-morning, police said the young girl's mother had been found and was speaking with police and representatives from other government departments.

Police say their appeal for Ruby's mother reached more 160,000 people on social media alone.
