Mother shields child before park attack

A woman sexually assaulted in a public toilet block while her daughter hid nearby has provided police with a description of the attacker.

A mother was knocked out and sexually assaulted in a toilet block as her six-year-old daughter cowered in a cubicle on the NSW south coast.

The woman was at the playground with her daughter in Batemans Bay on the NSW south coast on November 27, when her daughter asked to go to the toilet.

The pair, believed to be from the local area, went to a public toilet block at the Clyde Street park.

Police say the mother, 37, was standing outside a cubicle waiting for her daughter when a man walked in the toilet block.

"The victim told her daughter to stay in the cubicle," Sex Crimes Squad Detective Inspector Michael Haddow told AAP.

The young girl was forced to cower inside the cubicle while her mother was punched, knocked unconscious and sexually assaulted.

The mother told police when she woke up, she saw the man on top of her but he fled a short time later.

"It's a horrendous experience for her and a very scary experience for her daughter," Det Insp Haddow said.

"(The mother) is coping as best as you could imagine."

If there was one fortunate aspect, Det Insp Haddow said, the daughter is not completely aware of what happened.

The waterfront park near the bridge into the small town is a popular place for families and police are hoping someone may have seen or heard something.

The man police are hunting was wearing a blue faded and tattered baseball cap, a grubby white t-shirt, shorts and white sneakers.

The man, who smelt of alcohol and cigarettes, is about 175 cm tall with a olive complexion.
