Mother to stand trial over babies' deaths

A mother who allegedly killed two newborn babies at her Brisbane home has been committed to stand trial.

A Brisbane mother has been committed to stand trial charged with murdering her two newborn babies.

Sursaree Surmila Chand did not enter a plea when she appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The 38-year-old is accused of killing the infants shortly after giving birth to them at her Bald Hills home in 2010 and 2012.

A committal hearing on Wednesday was told the body of a newborn girl was found in a washing machine at the house in January 2012.

No other body has been found.

On Thursday, Magistrate Jeffrey Clarke ruled Chand should face trial in the Supreme Court charged with two counts each of murder and concealing a birth.

"I'm of the opinion the evidence is sufficient to put you on trial for the indictable offences," he told Chand.

Her husband, Ronal Vikash Chand, has already been committed to face trial charged with manslaughter.

In summarising the evidence, Mr Clarke said a series of triple zero calls were made to the ambulance service from Chand's home on January 26, 2012.

Ambulance officers found the mother of four bleeding heavily with a severed umbilical cord protruding from her body.

The body of a newborn girl was found amongst towels and linen in the washing machine, which appeared to have been recently operated, Mr Clarke said.

A post-mortem examination was unable to determine cause of death, but found the child likely died from hypothermia, hyperthermia, or asphyxia.

Investigations revealed evidence Chand had been pregnant in 2010 and had presented at hospital on November 26 that year with signs she had recently given birth.

Mr Clark dismissed an application by Chand's legal team that she had no case to answer.

She was remanded in custody and will stand trial at a date to be set.
