Motorcyclists to get filtering lanes

NSW will be the first state to legalise motorcycle lane filtering in a bid to ease road congestion and improve safety.

NSW will be the first state in Australia to legalise motorcycle lane filtering, Minister for Roads and Ports Duncan Gay says.

He released the package of changes on Wednesday, which aims to help ease road congestion and improve safety by reforming laws for motorcyclists.

"We will introduce a new law that will permit fully licenced motorcyclists to legally filter past stationary vehicles at intersections when it is safe to do so," he said in a statement.

"Riders will be able to filter at a speed limit of 30km/h."

The changes come after a successful trial in 2013.

They will not apply to school zones.
