Motorists who saved bub are 'heroes': cops

Passing motorists who pulled a baby from a car that burst into flames after colliding with a truck have been praised for their heroic actions.

Authorities have praised the heroism of passing motorists who rescued a baby girl from a fiery crash that killed her mother.

Police say it's a miracle the 10-month-old only suffered minor injuries in the crash southwest of Brisbane.

"If there is any good news out of this tragic incident, it is the heroic actions of passersby to get into the car to retrieve this baby girl," Inspector Keith MacDonald told ABC Radio.

"People always talk about heroic actions of people in extreme tragic incidents, and this is a classic case where people haven't hesitated to take some action."

The fatal crash occurred on the Cunningham Highway at Aratula, southwest of Ipswich, about 9.30pm (AEST) on Thursday, when a truck and car collided near Lake Moogerah Road.

Police say the car, truck and its trailer were incinerated.

The baby was taken to the Mater Hospital for observation and the 38-year-old truck driver was taken to Ipswich Hospital for observation.

The baby's 21-year-old mother died at the scene.

Insp MacDonald said the father was now at the baby's bedside at the Mater Hospital.

It is believed the family had only recently moved to Queensland and the woman was turning into her mother's driveway when the tragedy occurred.
