Two cats came within a whisker of losing all nine lives after they were successfully resuscitated by an ambulance crew at a deliberately-lit fire in Port Augusta.

A 10-year-old boy, a 12-year-old girl and a 42-year-old woman have been charged with arson.

Firefighters were called to a home at 5am on Sunday to find it ablaze.

While no one was home, the two cats had to be revived when they were found not breathing.

Police arrested and charged the woman and two children, who are all from the South Australian town.

The woman was refused police bail to appear in the Port Augusta Magistrates Court on Monday.

The girl and boy have been bailed to appear in the Youth Court at a later date.
