Movement of asylum seekers 'encouraging'

The Human Rights Commission has welcomed the federal government's decision to resume the assessment of asylum seeker claims, and move children out of overseas detention.

The Human Rights Commission has described as encouraging the federal government's decision to end a freeze on processing asylum seekers, saying it's a sign the system could be moving towards becoming more humane.

It follows an announcement by the Department of Immigration that it has begun assessing the cases of asylum seekers who arrived by boat since the introduction in August 2012 of the so-called 'no advantage' policy.

The Department also announced all asylum seeker children have now been removed from Australia's immigration detention facility on Papua New Guinea's Manus Island.

Commission President, Professor Gillian Triggs told Nina Tietzel these are welcome developments.
