Penrith's Matt Moylan has finally begun running on the foot he injured in May, but the star fullback won't play again this NRL season.
Moylan suffered significant ligament damage to his foot in round 12 and had initially targeted Thursday's round 24 match against St George Illawarra as his comeback game.
That won't happen, but the 24-year-old has started running again and believes a full pre-season will set him up well for 2016.
"I began running again on the injury for the first time this week, which is a good thing," Moylan told AAP.
"But I saw a surgeon the other day and he said it's very unlikely I will play again this year. It's pretty disappointing and it has been tough to sit out such a long time. It's something that hasn't happened since I made my debut (in 2013)."
Moylan played only 11 games this year and his injury added to a large casualty ward for the Panthers, including long-term knee injuries to Jamal Idris and Peter Wallace that cruelled their premiership campaign.
Speaking at the announcement of tickets going on sale for the NRL Auckland Nines at Rugby League Central on Thursday, Moylan said it was a hard pill for the Panthers to swallow.
"We didn't think we could have as bad luck with injuries this year as we did last year, but that is just the way things have gone," Moylan said.
"It's been tough, but it just made us more determined ahead of next year.
"The good thing for me is I can get a full pre-season and be ready to go for the opening game of next year."
