Mozo clings on to lead in LPGA's NZ Open

Unheralded Spaniard Belen Mozo has retained her lead at the New Zealand Women's Open but her five-stroke margin is just a single shot after the third round.

Belen Mozo will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the LPGA Tour's New Zealand Women's Open on Sunday.

The Spaniard carded a one-under par 71 on Saturday to hold off the challenge from Canadian Brooke Henderson.

Mozo, who led by five strokes after the second round, is at 15-under after three rounds at the Windross Farm Golf Course.

First-round co-leader Henderson had a 67 to move into second place.

American Brittany Lincicome had a 66 to rocket up the leaderboard and be joint third at 11-under alongside China's Jing Yan.

Australia's Su Oh (69) is in a tie for 11th at eight-under in a group that includes local favourite Lydia Ko (70).

Sarah Kemp (69) is the nxt best Aussie is at six-under while Sarah Jane Smith (72) is a shot further back.

Stacey Peters (71) for two-under, Katherine Kirk (71) for even par and Whitney Hillier (74) for three-over are well off the pace.

After rounds of 66 and 64, Mozo's third-round score exemplified how difficult the layout became on Saturday when the wind began to blow and temperatures fell.

"It was a grind-out day for sure," she said.

"I had to talk to my caddie in the middle of the round because obviously I couldn't compare the golf I was playing today with the golf that I played yesterday under perfect conditions."

Henderson played aggressively on a day on which the wind made several holes play long and on which flag placements were challenging.

"Very tough conditions, so to shoot five-under was great," Henderson said.

"My game is in a very good spot so I'm excited to play tomorrow."

Forecast heavy rain and wind has prompted tournament organisers to opt for a two-tee start and an earlier start for Sunday's final round.
