Federal MP and former tennis player John Alexander has leapt to the defence of Nick Kyrgios, labelling him "courageous" for seeking help.

The Australian tennis star was banned from the ATP Tour for eight weeks, reduced to three if he enters a plan of care under the direction of a sports psychologist.

Mr Alexander told the lower house on Thursday that Kyrgios' recent on-court actions might not be unprofessional or immature but of someone struggling to cope with being in the public eye 24/7.

"His mental state may have been strained to breaking point by the constant attack by the media and others since his overnight celebrity status at Wimbledon in 2013," the Liberal member said.

"Nick needs the understanding and sensitivity that any young man needs as they grow to full mental and emotional maturity."
