MP citizenship audit sought

The Greens have proposed a way forward to end eligibility doubts about members of federal parliament.

HOW AN MP AUDIT WOULD WORK:

* Independent Parliamentary Expenses Authority would be empowered to run the audit.

* Immigration lawyers would advise the IPEA.

* Members of parliament would need to provide evidence they did not hold dual citizenship at the time of their nomination for the 2016 federal election.

* The IPEA would report to parliament on any MPs believed to have problems with their dual citizenship under the High Court's reading of section 44 of the constitution.

* The House of Representatives or Senate could then refer any cases to the High Court, as they have done in seven cases so far.
