MP Kate Ellis pregnant with second child

Outgoing senior federal Labor MP Kate Ellis is pregnant, her husband has revealed on radio.

Senior federal Labor MP Kate Ellis is pregnant with her second child, her husband says.

David Penberthy has revealed on the program he cohosts on FiveAA radio on Wednesday that the MP, who announced last week she would be quitting federal politics to spend more time with her family, is pregnant.

"We had the final, everything's good to go test yesterday," he said.

Ms Ellis announced on Thursday she would end her parliamentary career at the next election for "one simple reason" - to spend more time with her family.

The youngest woman to be elected to the federal parliament when she first won the seat of Adelaide in 2004 at age 27, Ms Ellis said on the day that she still loved her job.

But she said she did not want to be separated from her young son Sam, who is about to turn two, for up to 20 weeks each year once he started school.

She said her decision was not about gender and she hoped it would not discourage other young women, including young mothers, from standing for parliament.

"I'd hate for my legacy to be sending a message that you can't be a young woman and go into federal parliament," she said.
