A federal Nationals MP wants to increase domestic intervention orders to three years and is going to raise the issue with Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

Andrew Broad says he's discussed increasing the existing one-year term of orders to three years with police and believes it would be a wise move.

Statistically after 12 months the offender begins to contact the victim again, the MP told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday.

"By increasing that out to three years that's more time for the wounds of a break-up of a bad relationship to heal," Mr Broad said.

The issue of national intervention orders is being looked into by federal and state governments.

"It's something I'll be chatting to the prime minister about."

Mr Broad, a member of Parliamentarians Against Family Violence, has sympathy for a trade union claim for 10 days paid domestic violence leave, but he doesn't want it go against women seeking employment.

"I don't want it then to be a factor when someone is employing perhaps a woman who may have come out of a family violence relationship for an employer to be cautious," he said.

But compassionate leave needed to be given to affected women.
