MPs labour point about breastfeeding

Liberal MP Alan Tudge says there are "pluses and minuses" to breastfeeding in the chamber.

A senior Liberal MP believes there are "pluses and minuses" in allowing his colleagues to breastfeed in the chambers of federal parliament.

But Alan Tudge is reluctant to detail the minuses.

The assistant minister dodged questions when quizzed by reporters on Wednesday.

"I think there's obviously pluses and minuses to that, I can see arguments both ways," he said.

When pressed about the minuses, Mr Tudge said he wouldn't go into the details preferring to wait for the decision of a parliamentary committee looking into the issue.

"I wouldn't have any personal problem myself but let's just wait for the process to go through," the father-to-be said.

Fellow Liberals Craig Laundy and Dan Tehan said they were comfortable with colleagues breastfeeding in the chamber.

"It is a necessary thing that women have to be able to breastfeed newly-borns," Mr Tehan said.

Labor MP and mother Terri Butler said of course women should be allowed to breastfeed in the chamber.

"It's ridiculous to suggest otherwise," she said.

Colleague Nick Champion said it didn't worry him at all.

"It's pretty easy to make that decision isn't it? I don't think you really need to labour it," he said.
