Ricky Muir was pleasantly surprised at the number of reporters he'd managed to attract to a classic car show outside Parliament House.

That was until they started asking questions.

Senator Muir, who represents the Motoring Enthusiasts Party, was launching the Parliamentary Friends of Motoring on Tuesday.

With cameras weaving around beautifully polished vintage cars, Senator Muir was repeatedly asked about his position on the government's higher education overhaul.

That's because he could provide the government with one of the six crossbench votes it needs to have its legislation clear the Senate, possibly as early as Tuesday.

"I'm very happy to answer any other questions unrelated to this (launch) at another time," he told reporters.

"Right now we're here for Parliamentary Friends of Motoring."

Senator Muir declined to say when he would answer questions on other matters.

Earlier, independent senator Jacqui Lambie said she was worried the coalition had got the better of her cross bench colleague.

She reminded him of his humble beginnings and that he might not still hold his seat in six years.

"He has four or five children and I am sure he would like to see them have the opportunity of going to university," she told reporters.

"Putting that many kids through university will cost a fortune and it will be outside what he can afford if that be the case."
