The woman who drove a 4WD into a suburban Melbourne lake, resulting in the deaths of three of her children, has been released from police custody.

Akon Guode, 35, was allowed to return to her family late on Thursday night after being questioned by police.

Ms Guode has not been charged, and police say their investigation into Wednesday's tragic incident in Wyndham Vale is ongoing.

"She has been interviewed and allowed to leave without being charged," a Victoria Police spokeswoman told AAP.

"The investigation is continuing."
