A Chinese tourist accused of murdering a Melbourne grandmother and her grandson with garden shears has sobbed in court while family of her alleged victims looked on.

Cai Xia Liao, 45, is accused of fatally stabbing Mai Mach, 60, and Alistair Kwong, 4, at a suburban Albanvale home in March.

She appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court via video link on Tuesday, and cried loudly throughout a mention of her case.

Family of Ms Mach and Alistair were present in court.

Legal Aid lawyer Kate Perry asked for an adjournment of Liao's case, saying there were about 2000 pages of materials that needed to be considered.

Among those items were conversations over a messaging app, the court heard.

"That goes, apparently, to intent," Ms Perry said.

Text messages also needed to be translated, and Ms Perry said it was "prudent" Liao be assessed by a psychiatrist, given the nature of the alleged offending.

A court has previously heard Liao was dumped by her lover Giangwa Mach, 61, the husband of Mrs Mach and grandfather of Alistair.

Liao is accused of tying up and gagging Mr Mach before allegedly killing Ms Mach and Alistair.

She is also charged with intentionally causing injury, assault and false imprisonment in relation to Mr Mach.

The matter was adjourned to August 13 and Liao was remanded in custody.

Liao also sobbed throughout a court appearance in April.
