A 27-year-old man has been charged with murder over a fatal assault outside a fast food restaurant in Melbourne.

Police say Kyle Zandipour, of Melbourne, was charged and faced an out-of-sessions court hearing on Saturday evening.

He was remanded in custody and is due to face Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday.

The murder charge follows an attack on a 21-year-old Parkville man outside a McDonald's on St Kilda Road just after 1am on Saturday.

The victim, who has not been named, died from his injuries an hour later in hospital.

A second man who was assisting police with inquiries has provided a statement and will not face any charges, police said.
