Murky water and athlete behaviour

There was murky water, dubious athlete behaviour and some more incredible efforts from Michael Phelps at the Olympics.

Green, not gold, was the colour of the day at the Olympic diving venue.

Sure, China won their third consecutive gold medal on Tuesday, but the buzz was about the colour of the water in the diving pool - a murky green.

That was in stark contrast to the pool's light blue colour the previous day and also that of the clear water in the second pool used for the water polo competition at Maria Lenk Aquatic Center.

British diver Tom Daley, who earned bronze in men's synchronised 10-metre on Monday, tweeted a photo of the two pools next to each other and captioned it, "Ermmm...what happened?!"

Water quality has been a major issue surrounding the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, but in the ocean and lagoons, not the pools.

A statement from Olympic organisers said water tests were conducted and there was no risk to athletes. They couldn't explain the colour change, but said it's being investigated.

"We don't know exactly what happened," organising committee spokesman Mario Andrada said. "And we don't know yet why the pool changed colours.

"If it were green and yellow, we would know it was a patriotic thing," Andrada joked, referring to Brazil's (and Australia's) national colours.

"We did test the water using the same parameters we do every day, and the results were exactly the same as we got when the pool was blue."

In the swimming pool it was largely red, white and blue on Tuesday as the United States picked up three gold medals.

Katie Ledecky powered to a women's 200m freestyle win while Michael Phelps made it 21 gold medals in his extraordinary career and two for the night with victory in the men's 200m butterfly and as the anchor of the US men's 4x200m freestyle squad.

The Americans also took out the gymnastics women's team final.

Katinka Hosszu of Hungary is also piling up quite the gold medal collection, claiming her third gold of the Olympics with a victory in the 200-metre individual medley.

Hosszu added to her wins in the 400 IM and 100 backstroke.

Things weren't quite so golden though for a number of other athletes.

French tennis player Benoit Paire was kicked off the country's Olympic team for violating team rules.

The 16th seed at the Rio Games, was asked to pack his bags, French tennis federation official Arnaud Di Pasquale told TV broadcaster France 2, according to the L'Equipe newspaper.

Dutch gymnast Yuri van Gelder was also shown the door for "gravely" violating team rules by going out for a night of drinking in Rio after qualifying for the finals of the rings event.

Things were substantially worse for Polish weightlifting Olympic medal contender Tomasz Zielinski whose Games ended after a positive doping test.

It wasn't much of a day if your last name was Williams either.

Olympic champion and world No.1 tennis player Serena Williams left in tears after a shock third round loss to Ukraine's Elina Svitolina while New Zealand rugby sevens player Sonny Bill Williams ruptured his Achilles tendon, ruling him out of the Olympics in Japan's shock first match defeat of the Kiwis.

In more positive news Brazilian legend Pele tweeted that he hopes to appear at the closing ceremony after missing the opening because of his health.
