Showing signs of returning to his old form, Andy Murray has moved into the third round at the Citi Open by beating No. 4 seed Kyle Edmund 7-6 (4) 1-6 6-4 for just his third victory since having hip surgery.

Murray, a three-time major champion and former world No. 1 who was sidelined for 11 months because of an injury to his right hip, is now ranked 832nd in the world.

Hscored the victory over his fellow Brit with a cross-court winner on a second serve.

Meanwhile, Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from the tournament with a hip injury in a further setback to his build-up for this month's US Open.

Kyrgios had injured his hip a week earlier in Atlanta but the fifth seed made the trip to the US capital hoping to be fit, only to pull out of his opening match against fellow Aussie James Duckworth.

World No.17 Kyrgios is still scheduled to play tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati before the year's final major which begins on August 27 at Flushing Meadows.

In other men's action, No. 15 seed Mischa Zverev of Germany moved into the third round by defeating Tim Smyczek of the US 6-2, 7-6 (7).

Zverev's next match could be against his younger brother, No. 1 seed and defending champion Alexander.

American Frances Tiafoe cruised to a comfortable 6-2 6-4 win over Poland's Hubert Hurkacz.

After trading early breaks the 13th seeded Tiafoe took control at 2-2 sweeping the next six games to take the opening set and a 2-0 lead in the second.

American Denis Kudla eased past Russian 12th seed Karen Khachanov 6-2 6-3 while Frenchman Jeremy Chardy was another early casualty as the 14th seed fell 6-4 6-4 to 93rd ranked Romanian Marius Copil.
