Former prime minister John Howard says raising the GST is necessary to allow for cuts in personal income and company taxes.
The Turnbull government has rejected raising the GST to 15 per cent in its tax reform package, saying it provides little in the way of economic growth.
But Mr Howard, who introduced the GST in 2000, says it would allow reductions in personal income tax and company tax, providing greater efficiencies that don't rely heavily on direct taxes.
