Myer and eBay have launched a virtual reality department store in which shoppers can browse and buy items by simply looking at them.
In what the retailers say is a world first, shoppers can browse more than 12,500 products in the Myer store on eBay after inserting their phone into a virtual reality viewer.
A specifically designed cardboard viewing device, dubbed `shopticals', is being offered for free.
Myer chief executive Richard Umbers said the collaboration with eBay will open a new and exciting chapter for retail.
"This really showcases a department store that can bring the love of shopping to life across both physical and digital environments," he said.
Managing director of eBay Australia and New Zealand, Jooman Park, said the new experience expands on traditional retail and improves its efficiency and personalisation.
"By building the world's first virtual reality department store here in Australia and observing the reactions of thousands of consumers who trial the experience, we have the opportunity to lead the world into the next phase of retailing," he said.
HOW IT WORKS:
1. Shopper selects areas of interest and the store makes the most relevant products visible first.
2. When shopper holds their gaze on a product, it is selected and can be viewed from various angles in 3D
3. Shopper can hold their gaze on information icons to open full product specifications, price, availability and shipping details
4. To buy, shopper holds their eyes on Add to Basket icon, and completes purchases via the eBay app.
