MyHealth opt-in and opt-out rates level

Almost as many Australians have opted back into the government's My Health record system as opted out.

People had until January 31 before a record was created, with 2.5 million Australians making the decision to opt out of the system.

Nearly as many people are opting back into the government's digitised national health record system as are opting out.

Australians were given the chance to opt out of the creation of a My Health record after privacy concerns were raised about the government, and potentially third parties, accessing their medical history.

Health department representatives told a Senate estimates committee that 23,528 Australians have cancelled their My Health record since February 22 this year.

But 22,129 have opted back in since that date.

Earlier this year the department said nine out of ten Australians had a My Health record.

People had until January 31 before a record was created, with 2.5 million Australians making the decision to opt out of the system.

While senators were given various figures regarding My Health, health officials were unable to provide proportional data.

But Australian Digital Health Agency chief executive Tim Kelsey said 80 per cent of community pharmacists were uploading dispensed medication data to My Health.

He also pointed to Royal Perth Hospital's toxicology and emergency departments using the data to triage patients who presented with an overdose or poison problem.

"This is really the first time ... that these kinds of data have been available to front-line clinical staff," Mr Kelsey told a Senate estimates committee on Wednesday.

He said about 278,000 out of about 24 million had accessed their My Health record for the first time since the opt out period ended.

My Health record connections:

* 616 public hospitals and health services across the country are connected to My Health

* 216 private hospitals and clinics are connected

* 4.7 million discharge summaries from hospitals have been added to My Health

* 22.41 million pathology reports from private and public health system were uploaded to My Health

* 4.11 million diagnostic imaging reports from both systems added to My Health.
