A man is fighting for his life in hospital after being rescued from a NSW beach - but his identity is a mystery.

Police are trying to establish who the man is after he was pulled from the water at Putty Beach, Killcare on Friday morning.

Emergency services rushed to the Central Coast beach after someone spotted the man struggling in the water.

The man, aged in his 30s or 40s, was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital and is in a critical condition.

Police have released a description of the man in the hope someone who knows him will come forward.

He was wearing a brown Abercrombie & Fitch jumper, brown GAP jeans and green and blue Salomon running shoes.

He was also wearing a wedding ring with a distinctive inscription.
