The chief executive of NAB has promised to lead the bank's response to the royal commission "personally and visibly" after he and chairman Ken Henry were heavily criticised.

Andrew Thorburn said the commission's final report was "very hard to read" and did not reflect who he was or how he was driving change inside the bank.

"I have cancelled my planned long-service leave aside from a personal family commitment next week," he said in a statement on Tuesday.

"I will lead this personally and visibly, and alongside NAB's 30,000 employees who share my determination to be better for customers."

Dr Henry dismissed suggestions from the royal commission that he seemed unwilling to accept criticism of how the board dealt with issues like charging fees for no service.

"I am disappointed that the commissioner formed this view. I know that is not so," he said.

"The board and I have reflected deeply on those and other issues and, as I have said previously, we take them very seriously."

The Australian Banking Association has leapt to the defence of the NAB bosses.

ABA head Anna Bligh said the commissioner had formed an opinion based on one session of evidence at a hearing last year.

"All I can say is that I have seen both of these men on a number of occasions at meetings in rooms where they have had to put their hand up for reform and change and they have always been adopters and promoters of change, not resisters," she told Nine Network.
