French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko has been given the honour of starting Australian Open proceedings on Rod Laver Arena.

The 20-year-old, who has Samantha Stosur's former coach David Taylor in her corner, begins Monday's opening day against fellow Roland Garros champion Francesca Schiavone.

World No.1 Rafael Nadal, top Australian Nick Kyrgios and local favourites Stosur and Daria Gavrilova are all in action on the first day of the 2018 event.

Kyrgios has been scheduled to play on his preferred Hisense Arena where he takes on world No.100 Rogerio Dutra Silva.

Nadal faces Victor Estrella Burgos in the first night session on Rod Laver Arena, before Gavrilova takes on a yet-to-be-confirmed qualifier.

Stosur will play Monica Puig on Margaret Court Arena, a day after saying she didn't have a problem with being put on the show court, despite the views of the 64-time grand slam winner.

Returning champion Billie Jean King on Friday condemned the views of Court - who she counts as a personal friend - re-igniting the debate around renaming the Melbourne Park arena.

"I'll play on whatever court I'm scheduled on," Stosur said.

"I wouldn't say too many players have spent time thinking about it."

US Open champion Sloane Stephens will also play on Margaret Court Arena against China's Shuai Zhang.

Perennial favourite Roger Federer will begin his campaign on Tuesday, as will Australia's highest-ranked woman Ashleigh Barty.

Qualifying for the Open concludes on Sunday before the tournament begins.

Four Australians, led by fallen hope Bernard Tomic, will attempt to join the 17 other locals in the men's and women's main draws.
