Rafael Nadal is being offered a Heineken Open wild card after his surprise first-round defeat in the Qatar Open.

Tournament director Karl Budge has been in contact with the 14-time grand slam champion's management team and is awaiting a reply.

The world No.3 was beaten by German Michael Berrer 1-6 6-3 6-4, who is ranked 127th, leaving him to consider plan B in his preparations for the Australian Open.

Nadal came into 2015 with just seven matches under his belt after Wimbledon because of injury and illness.

The 28-year-old Spaniard has appeared twice in Auckland, losing the final in 2004 and withdrawing during the first round a year later because of injury.

The Heineken Open, which begins next Monday, already boasts the strongest line-up in its history, with seven top-20 players.
