World No.1 Rafael Nadal and American Serena Williams will headline the US Open's opening night which will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Open Era.

The venue will be the majestic Arthur Ashe Stadium, where some of the biggest names in tennis will gather alongside players who have accumulated 40 individual grand slam titles.

Nadal will be trying to defend the men's title and Williams will be trying to take home her seventh New York trophy and secure the 24th title of her career, to equal the record of Margaret Court.

Serena will compete first under the lights followed by Nadal, and the matches will bring to a close the first day of the Open, during which eight former tourney champions will play.

Nadal, who is seeking his fourth US Open title, will go up against his compatriot and friend David Ferrer, whom he has confronted 30 times, winning 24 of those matches.

Williams, the 17th seed, will play Poland's Magda Linette and, if she advances, could face her sister Venus in the third round and Spain's Garbine Muguruza in the round of 16.

This year for the first time evening matches will be played both at Arthur Ashe Stadium and in the new Louis Armstrong Stadium.
