Naive England can't let Lyon settle

Legendary cricket allrounder Sir Ian Botham says England need to be more proactive against Australian spinner Nathan Lyon and brutal with their bowling.

Cricket legend Sir Ian Botham says England bowlers need to be more brutal and that their batsmen were naive in the way they played Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

England's tail struggled against short pitched bowling in the first Test loss in Brisbane and Botham feels similar treatment needs to be meted out to their Australian counterparts.

England had an opportunity too to get stuck into the Australian tail but they didn't," Botham told Fox Sports' Inside Cricket.

"There was no real aggression, no real venom ... so fight fire with fire.

"When the Australian boys were bowling a lot of the wickets were with short balls so I think you've got to be a bit more brutal and a bit more aggressive and in the face of the opposition."

For all the pre-match talk about Australia's pace trio, off spinner Lyon was one of their best bowlers in the Test victory.

The NSW finger spinner took 5-145 across the two England innings and conceded less than two and a half runs an over for the match.

'He bowled some terrific stuff but I don't think England played him very well," Botham said.

"There was no aggression, there was no intent.

"You can't let a step and fetch it bowler just settle in and just get away with doing this all day long, you've got to make him think.

"If that means going over the top fine but you've got to do something.

"He's allowed to just settle Nathan Lyon, he's going to get wickets.

"It's inevitable on a pitch that's turning so make him change his length, make him change his line, do something.

"I thought we were very very naive there particularly on day one, needed to be a lot more proactive with Nathan Lyon."
