Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack has an ambitious plan to eliminate road fatalities.
The transport minister on Monday will outline the government's plans to advance the 12 recommendations from last year's inquiry into the 2011 national road safety strategy, which set the goal to eradicate road deaths.
The strategy says no person should be killed or seriously injured on Australia's roads, setting the target for a reduction of at least 30 per cent by 2020.
"As has been put to me by stakeholders I have met, a vision for zero might sound ambitious, but in aviation, mining, and construction this is no longer a goal but an expectation," Mr McCormack will tell parliament on Monday.
About 64 per cent of deaths on Australia's roads happen in regional and remote Australia.
"This must change," Mr McCormack will say.
A meeting of state and territory governments will develop a plan to implement 12 recommendations from an inquiry into the strategy.
A governance review is underway to improve co-operation between different tiers of government on reducing the road toll.
"I intend to do more with my state and territory counterparts on education campaigns, better understanding behavioural influences to inform compliance, and what technological responses might be available," Mr McCormack will say.
