Nationals president not on lobby register

The Nationals Party president is facing questions about why he's not listed on a lobbyists register despite owning a lobbying firm.

The National Party president is under fire for failing to put his name on the lobbyists register despite the fact he's the founding director of a lobbying firm.

Larry Anthony, a former Howard government minister, heads the SAS Group, which is on the lobbyists register and has clients that include gas giant Santos.

Another client, Indue, runs the federal government's cashless welfare card program and Nationals MPs have been among those pushing for an expansion of its footprint.

Labor frontbencher Don Farrell said Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce had serious questions to answer about Mr Anthony's "clear conflict of interest".

He said it makes a "mockery" of the obvious intent of the register to prevent conflicts of interest.

Senator Farrell called for the government to investigate all government contracts awarded to organisations Mr Anthony's lobbying firm represents.

Greens senator Lee Rhiannon said the fact Mr Anthony is personally not listed exposes the register as a farce.

She said her party will be pushing for parliamentary inquiry into lobbying once parliament returns in mid October.
