A Nauru detention centre guard has reportedly been caught confessing to falsely claiming he was assaulted by an asylum seeker, a story that he repeated in court.

The Wilson Security guard, thought to be Australian, was secretly recorded by a colleague saying he made up the allegation so the asylum seeker would never make it to Australia, according to a Fairfax Media report on Thursday.

The asylum seeker, who was later found not guilty over the alleged assault by a Nauru court, reportedly tried to kill himself three times after being accused.

Though it was a Wilson Security investigator who made the recording, the company says there's not enough evidence to make a finding against the guard.
