Nauru's president has accused the Australian media and refugee advocates of bullying his nation.

President Baron Waqa, in an opinion piece in The Daily Telegraph on Monday, has hit back at critics for mocking the "simpler lifestyle" of Nauruans and attacking his country's treatment of refugees and asylum seekers.

"Asylum seekers enjoy an open centre policy and are regularly seen swimming, dining out and enjoying a lifestyle that is safe - far safer than the lands they left," he said.
