Nauru reaps visa windfall

The Nauru government is reaping a $30 million windfall from Australia for refugee and asylum seeker visas.

The Australian government is forking out $1000 a month per asylum seeker and refugee in visa costs on Nauru.

The immigration department has revealed it had paid the Nauru government $27.9 million for asylum seeker visas up to March 30 and just over $1 million for refugee visas to February 23.

There are currently 718 asylum seekers in detention on Nauru and 500 refugees temporarily resettled on the island.
