Philadelphia 76ers guard Tony Wroten, the NBA club's leading scorer, will be sidelined indefinitely because of a torn right knee ligament.
Wroten suffered the anterior cruciate ligament injury against New Orleans on January 16.
"The best course of action for Tony's basketball career is to repair his ACL surgically," 76ers general manager Sam Hinkie said.
"While the precise timing and details of the procedure are still being finalised, what has been determined is that the ACL will need to be surgically repaired."
No timeline for Wroten's return will be made until the operation takes place.
Wroten has averaged 16.9 points and 5.2 assists over 30 games this season in his second campaign with the 76ers.
At 8-34, the Sixers have the third-worst record in the NBA, just ahead of Minnesota (7-34) and the New York Knicks (7-36).
Philadelphia and Minnesota each have a league-low three home wins in 20 such starts.
