NBA star faces child abuse allegations

NBA star Dwight Howard is being investigated for allegedly hitting his son with a belt and is facing child abuse charges.

NBA star Dwight Howard is under criminal investigation in Georgia on child abuse allegations that he beat his six-year-old son with a belt buckle, according to media reports Wednesday.

A case against Howard was originally opened on October 1 but the Department of Children and Families in Florida concluded there was insufficient evidence to continue.

The incident occurred in Georgia and police in the state's Cobb County have received information or evidence that prompted them to reopen the case, Dana Pierce, a spokesman for Cobb County police told the LA Times newspaper.

"We will methodically process this case," Pierce said.

Howard, who starred for the Orlando Magic, LA Lakers and now the Houston Rockets, admitted he hit his son Braylon with a belt, but said he didn't know it was wrong because he was hit as a child himself, according to celebrity website TMZ.

Howard's attorney, Oscar Markus says the son's mother, Royce Reed is "shopping her baseless allegations" to Georgia authorities even though Florida's Department of Children and Families found the claims had "no merit." Markus strongly believes Georgia authorities will come to the same decision as Florida did.

"We are confident the Georgia authorities will reach the same conclusion as the Florida authorities," Markus said in a statement.

"The truth is on our side."
