Australian NBA star Patty Mills is reportedly facing up to seven months on the sidelines with a shoulder injury, ruling him out of the Boomers' World Cup campaign.

The championship-winning San Antonio Spurs point guard will undergo surgery in coming days, with scans revealing damage to a rotator cuff, according to Fairfax Media.

The report claims Mills had experienced pain in his right shoulder throughout the NBA season.

It comes barely a fortnight after the 25-year-old's efforts to help lift the Spurs to a NBA title and on the first day of the league's free-agency negotiating period.

Mills, whose two-year Spurs contract has expired, was said to be in line for a healthy pay rise with several franchises expressing interest.

The injury is a huge blow for the Australian men's basketball team, who are considered medal contenders at this year's World Cup in Spain starting on August 30.
