Melbourne Tigers captain Tommy Greer has announced his NBL retirement, effective immediately.

Greer has decided to pursue off-court career opportunities after nine seasons and two championships with the Tigers.

"A lot of sports people say they love their club, but I actually grew up watching the Tigers as a fan of the Tigers and loving the Tigers," Greer said.

"I got to live the dream of actually playing for the Tigers, winning championships with the Tigers and being captain of the Tigers, and that's something I'm really very grateful for.

"There are some opportunities available to me away from the basketball court that would not be available at the end of next season."

A one-club player in the NBL, Greer is a favourite son of the Tigers and will be missed.

"Tommy is the epitome of a team player, a total professional with his preparation and dedication, and a fine example for any player to follow," Tigers general manager Vince Crivelli said.

"We will miss his influence and presence within the team, but we will never forget what he means to the Tigers."
