NBN expects massive revenue growth

The number of homes and businesses using the national broadband network is forecast to jump to 2.3 million by June, doubling NBN Co's revenue.

NBN Co boss Bill Morrow is confident 2.3 million homes and businesses will be using the $49 billion high speed broadband network by June, more than doubling the company's current revenue.

There were 1.6 million users of the NBN at December 31, generating revenue of $403 million for the company behind the rollout.

"Take up of services over the NBN network is growing, as is average data use per home," Mr Morrow said on Thursday.

"Growing penetration is driving encouraging revenue growth."

NBN Co is on track to reach 5.4 million premises by June 30, and have 2.3 million users, delivering revenue of $900 million, Mr Morrow said.

However, average revenue per user - a key figure for the telco industry - of $43 a month in the half year to December 31 was steady from the same period a year earlier.

Mr Morrow expects ARPU to rise over time as more customers come on board and data usage jumps. Revenue from businesses is also expected to be sharply higher than residential.

NBN Co has forecast ARPU of $52 a month by 2020, or about $5 billion in total revenue.

The group's net loss widened to $1.83 billion over the six months to December, from $1.24 million a year earlier, as the company continued to spend money on the network, marketing and staff costs.

More than 70 per cent of the project's construction has taken place in regional and rural areas so far, with construction set to ramp-up in metropolitan areas this year.

NBN Co charges telcos including Telstra, Optus and TPG Telecom to access the network, and they resell the service to their customers.
