NBN Chairman Ziggy Switkowski has told business leaders he is confident of making its roll out targets, despite connection being less than four times its required rate.
During a speech today in Sydney, Mr Switkowski said the NBN was on track to deliver.
"We are at an early stage where we're developing the capability to do it at the rate that's required," he said. "There will be big steps taken forward when we complete the negotiations with Telstra."
AIG Chief Executive Innes Willox said he welcomed the update but said the business centre wanted more from the NBN.
"What we need is a product that works and we need to get greater connectivity to business. So far businesses have been left out of the equation and the more we can integrate business into the NBN roll out the better it will be for the national economy."
He said business leaders believed high speed internet would revolutionise the workplace.
"We think it's crucial because it will definitely lead to us improving our competitiveness and our productivity," he said.
"It will allow work practices to change and people to work from home more so it will provide greater flexibility - it's got enormous potential for Australian businesses."
