Stick `em up and hand over your cash, Ned Kelly's childhood home depends on it.

The heritage-listed wooden shack that housed one of Australia's most notorious criminals is on the market.

Grow a beard, pop on your armour and head to Beveridge in northern Victoria to bid on this piece of Australian history.

The National Trust of Australia will be entering the bidding war, desperate to buy and restore the property built by Kelly's father in 1859.

The Trust has managed to scrape together $100,000 but is seeking help from the public to drum up the estimated $650,000 needed to purchase the iconic house.

John 'Red' Kelly built his family's first home using materials scavenged from the bushland.

Ned grew up in the home with his seven siblings and the house has remained virtually untouched since they moved out following his father's death in 1866.

Built in a classic Irish style, the dilapidated shack is in desperate need of some love to ensure it doesn't topple to the ground.

The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) CEO Martin Purslow says they are committed to safeguarding and preserving the historic site for the future.

"The Ned Kelly story has a resonance with Australians and international visitors worldwide and Ned Kelly himself is one of our most significant Australian cultural heritage folk heroes," Mr Purslow said.

The cottage was added to the Victorian Heritage Register in 1992, meaning that whoever purchases the house has an obligation to maintain it.

Mr Purslow says the Trust offers the best guarantee that the house will be restored and maintained into the future.

The eventual buyer will also own a second property on the 3.5-acre block of land, a four-bedroom federation-style home only 207 metres from the Kelly house.

The cottage is currently under private ownership and will be auctioned in September.
