Business believes a snapshot of Australia in 2055 shows the urgent need to end reform gridlock.

The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry says the findings of the intergenerational report reveal Australia has no room for complacency if it wants to maintain its standard of living.

"We must break through the legislative gridlock that is holding back essential reforms but not generating constructive alternatives," CEO Kate Carnell said on Thursday.

She said critics opposing government measures now on the table need to put forward their own ideas.

"Just saying `no' is not a viable option."
